Blood and Tissue Samples Needed

In a continuing effort to learn more about the causes of canine bladder cancer (TCC) and how the disease forms and progresses, our research group is conducting studies on blood samples from dogs with TCC and blood samples from dogs of similar age and breed who do not have TCC. Studies are also being performed on tumor tissues from dogs with TCC.

We ask veterinarians and pet owners to help us identify dogs who may provide valuable samples for this work. The types of samples needed and contact information is provided below.

Blood samples needed:
From: (1) Scottish terriers and West Highland White terriers who have confirmed TCC, and (2) Scottish terriers and West Highland White terriers who are at least 5 years old and who do not have TCC.
Sample needed: 2 tubes of EDTA blood (approximately 5 ml), refrigerated, and mailed to the NIH to arrive within 5 days.
Please contact Dana Mosher beforehand at at the National Institutes of Health.
Ms. Mosher will send a consent form for the pet owner to fill in and sign as well as mailing information.

Tissue samples needed:
It would contribute greatly to the study of TCC to analyze tissues samples collected at the time of euthanasia of any dog with TCC, or suspected TCC. Urinary bladder tumor, lymph nodes near the bladder, liver, and any other suspected site of tumor spread would be valuable to our investigations.
Please contact Ms. Patty Bonney ahead of time at the address below. If it is feasible, we may ask to receive snap frozen tissue samples as well as formalin fixed tissues. For formalin fixed tissues, please place 1 part tissue to 10 parts formalin (by volume).
